How TealJar works
TealJar is envelope budgeting: money that comes in waits as Free to plan until you put it into envelopes. Each envelope shows what you funded, what you spent and what is left.
What is Free to plan?
Money in your spending accounts that is not in any envelope yet. Aim to bring it to zero by funding envelopes: then every amount has a purpose.
Funded, Spent and Left
Funded is what you put into the envelope this month. Spent is what you filed to it (refunds lower it). Left is what remains, including anything carried in from last month.
What happens if I overspend?
The envelope shows Over and the amount. Next month it starts at zero again, and the overspend already came out of Free to plan. Shift money from another envelope to cover it this month.
Shift money between envelopes
Open an envelope and choose Shift, or use Shift on Home. Pick where the money comes from, where it goes and how much.
How do credit cards work?
Each card has a payment envelope. When you spend on the card from a funded envelope, that amount moves into the card's payment envelope, ready for the bill. Paying the card from a bank account empties it again. If an envelope could not cover a card purchase, the shortfall shows on Home.
Goals
An envelope can have a goal: fund a monthly amount, keep a balance, or reach a sum by a date. TealJar shows how much it still needs this month and how close you are.
Balance check
Compare an account with your bank's balance. Confirmed entries are marked as checked, so you know the account matched on that date.
What is cash runway?
How many days the cash in your spending accounts would last at your average spending over the last 90 days. Under 30 days is shown as your safety line.
Entries to review
Entries added automatically wait in To review until you look at them. Check the envelope and payee, then mark them reviewed.
